Call for Play Submissions: Typhoon Festival 2019 in UK

This autumn in London, Yellow Earth will present its popular biennial playreading festival, TYPHOON, showcasing a new selection of bold new writing by playwrights of East Asian decent from around the globe. Call for play submisison is open now!

Two plays from TYPHOON 2017 have gone on to have UK runs: White Pearl by Anchuli Felicia King is currently being performed on the main stage at the Royal Court and Forgotten by Daniel York Loh had a UK tour in autumn 2018, playing at the Arcola Theatre (London) and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Summer Rolls by Tuyen Do, which had a staged reading at TYPHOON 2016, will be playing this summer at the Park Theatre and Bristol Old Vic.

Yellow Earth Theatre was formed in 1995 by five British East Asian(BEA) actors; Kwong Loke, Kumiko Mendl, Veronica Needa, David KS Tse and Tom Wu.

The company sought to develop work that would widen the choice and type of roles being offered to BEA actors at that time and to create work that brought together our physical skills and western drama school training to present plays that explored our own cultural heritage.

Over its 21 year history Yellow Earth has worked with many of the best BEA actors, writers, directors and designers to create a wide range of award winning work from new writing to bold adaptations of classics; from family friendly shows to participatory and site responsive work. Yellow Earth also provides professional development opportunities for BEA artists while inspiring the next generation to get involved in the arts.

In the past three years the company has:
  • Given 296 performances in 42 venues across the country to over 17,000 people
  • Toured children’s shows to over 30 venues across the UK and been seen by over 10,000 children and their families
  • Attracted over 1,200 people and lots of praise and positive four and five star reviews for our site-specific show The Last Days of Limehouse
  • Supported & developed 24 BEA emerging writers
  • Given professional opportunities to 79 BEA performers & directors
  • Provided free drama school training to over 45 young BEA’s in Yellow Earth Academy, our annual Summer School.
  • Delivered 284 workshops to over 9,000 children in schools and Museums.
  • Presented 180 performances on the Cutty Sark and in the National Maritime Museum to over 3,500 people in partnership with the museums.
