[Bachelor Degree] International Scholarship Program at Southern Arkansas University, USA


Southern Arkansas University (SAU) (formerly known as Southern State College, Magnolia A&M, and Third District Agricultural School) is a public four-year institution located in Magnolia, Arkansas, in Columbia County, Arkansas, situated less than 20 miles north of the Louisiana state line.

Maintaining a 17–1 student to instructor ratio, Southern Arkansas University offers programs that are unique for the region, including Game and Animation Design with a computer science concentration, or an arts and design focus. The University also provides an engineering program, the only of its kind in the southern half of the state.

In 2002, the University began a major capital campaign, the "Blue and Gold Vision," to upgrade academic and athletic facilities across the campus.The Blue and Gold Vision aims to raise $102.2 million for improvements to the University through a mix of public and private financing. Through the Blue and Gold Vision several new facilities have been built, including: the Donald W. Reynolds Campus & Community Center, Band Building, Mulerider Stables, University Village, Harton Theatre, Fincher Hall, and the Story Rodeo Arena.

Southern Arkansas offers two main types of scholarships for international students:
  • Initial scholarships for first-time freshmen coming to SAU.
  • The Retention Scholarship for current SAU international students.

1. Initial Scholarships
Recipients will be chosen by the International Office based only upon their SAT or ACT scores. Initial scholarships are limited and awarded to the students with the highest scores. These scholarships are renewable if the student maintains a good academic record as listed in the criteria below.

There are three types of initial scholarships:
  • Non-Resident Scholarship
    • An award equivalent to $1515 per semester ($3030 for the academic year).
    • Requirements:
      • New SAT score of at least 1160
      • ACT composite of least 24.
  • International Excellence Scholarship
    • An award equivalent to $2500 per semester ($5000 per academic year).
    • Requirements:
      • New SAT score of at least 1270
      • ACT composite of at least 27.
  • Presidential Scholarship
    • An award equivalent to $5500 per semester ($11,000 per academic year).
    • Requirements:
      • New SAT score of 1370
      • ACT composite of at least 30.
Criteria for Initial Scholarships:
  • Must be applying for F-1 visa student status.
  • Must be an incoming freshman student who has successfully completed secondary school and has not attended a post-secondary school.
  • Must meet required SAT or ACT scores.

For Automatic Renewal of the Scholarships
  • Must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • Must maintain at least 15 credit hours each semester.
  • Must live on campus.

2. Retention Scholarship
The Retention Scholarship is award after students complete 15 credit hours (usually finished after the first semester).

The award is equivalent to approximately $1515 per semester ($3030 for the academic year) which is the difference between resident and non-resident tuition cost.

Criteria for Retention Scholarship:

  • Only for students without other initial international scholarships.
  • Must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and have completed at least 15 hours at SAU.
  • Must live on campus

For Automatic Renewal of the Scholarships:
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and maintain at least 15 hours each semester to renew the scholarship.
  • Must continue to live on campus.
  • Only awarded for up to 7 semesters.

15 March 2019 (Initial Scholarships)
